Media Consultant & Broadcaster

Mick Ord

For more than 30 years, Mick Ord has worked where journalism, public life and communication meet.

His career began during the 1980s as a freelance radio reporter, learning his trade across Newcastle, Cambridge and Northampton before returning home to Liverpool in 1985. He joined BBC Radio Merseyside as a news reporter and steadily progressed through the organisation, serving as producer, news editor and ultimately Managing Editor.

For 17 years he led one of the BBC's best-known local radio stations, overseeing news coverage during periods of major political, social and cultural change across the Liverpool City Region. His leadership helped shape the station's editorial voice while mentoring generations of journalists entering the profession.

Alongside radio, Mick worked across television and digital journalism before moving to BBC Learning at MediaCityUK in Salford in 2012, helping develop new approaches to broadcasting and professional training.

After leaving the BBC in 2015, he founded Mick Ord Media, a consultancy specialising in media relations, interview preparation and crisis communications. Today he works with organisations, charities, public bodies and businesses, helping people communicate with confidence when public scrutiny is at its highest.

Away from consultancy, Mick remains deeply involved in Liverpool's creative community. He co-produces and presents the Misadventures in Music podcast alongside musician Ian Prowse and is one of the organisers behind Podfest North, Liverpool's first dedicated podcast festival, bringing together storytellers, broadcasters and independent creators from across the country.

His Irish heritage continues to shape much of his work. Through podcasts, documentaries and radio programmes, he has explored the enduring cultural, historical and personal connections between Ireland and Liverpool, preserving stories that continue to define both communities.

Whether behind a microphone, in a newsroom or advising leaders before a difficult interview, Mick believes the strongest communication begins with honesty, careful listening and respect for the audience.

The best stories are built on trust, curiosity and listening.

Good journalism begins long before the first question is asked. It starts by earning trust, understanding people and knowing when to listen.
